i was checking the website for the Bridget Smith House (ferremonte.org) shown yesterday and under "Restoration" it led to info about a Margaret Hickey of Connolly & Hickey Historical Architects

Went to their website and under current projects was a farm called Fosterfields....so I went to hunt it down. During the week the location was closed so I was about to leave but decided to drive up the hill since its in #morrisparks which led me to a small parking lot and the stairs shown with a mansion at the top

The house looked awesome and come to find it too is part of Fosterfields and thus part of the public park. Its currently being leased by CFNJ.org (Community Foundation of New Jersey) and met with Dayana who told me a little about the place @yourfavoritedayana

our website has a rating system. i give Jacobus a 3 (a 4 depending on season)

i like the property as a whole and has some good variety of backgrounds. the challenge is in time of day and the way the sun puts shadows from the trees all over the nicer side of the building during the afternoon (so planning and good understanding of lighting or flash is helpful....which is why i took out the diffuser yesterday which is challenging doing self portraits with it lol)

in July they lay out a ton of American Flags on the grounds which look really cool (thats the 4 aspect)

there is also a cool covered bridge lined with cherry blossom trees AND a silo with some graffiti on other areas of the park

some history

The Jacobus Vanderveer House and Museum, was the headquarters of General Henry Knox during the winter of 1778-79 and is the only surviving building associated with the Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment, America’s first military academy. A National and New Jersey historic site, the Vanderveer House interprets 18th century Dutch-Colonial life through the Vanderveer and Knox families and underscores the Pluckemin Cantonment’s role in helping the Continental Army to defeat the British during the American Revolution.

The oldest part of the Jacobus Vanderveer House was built in the early 1770s. It is typical of the Dutch frame houses that dotted the countryside before the American Revolution. Much of the original fabric of the house remains intact. A wall in the west parlor features raised wood paneling above the fireplace with a barrel-back cabinet to the side. The house retains the original wide pine board flooring.

I stole this location from @desirea_corbett @desirea_corbett_photography who loves to take her kids on adventures and when scrolling through her feed I saw she talked about this location called Liberty Hall (which is tucked away on the campus of Kean @keanuniversity)

Decided to venture out to get a closer look. Its HEAVEN.....for a price.

Met with Jessica (the Event Planner ) . Its $250 for a 2 hour session and you do get to use external flashes on the property. I forgot to ask about whether its only during normal visiting hours or can you book a session on off days (get a little more privacy for the cost)

General admission (cell phone photos) would be $14

During the Battle of Monmouth, this 18th-century farmhouse was the home of John and Ann Craig and their three children and was used as a hospital by the British forces in June of 1778. The house is located in Monmouth Battlefield State Park.

Permit Required for Commercial/Professional shoots

Pros -
the rustic chipped wood paint (you cant buy that backdrop)
ease of access (you park and its right there)
relatively private
family friendly

Cons -
midday sun is a nightmare as the building is small and in the middle of an open field making even lighting that much more of a thought process (time of day, overcast weather, flash vs natural)....so bring an assistant for light stands or reflectors as an open field means that much more chance of wind

i loved the wooden post entrance and i tried so hard to get a self portrait there but had to settle for a dramatic pose vs relaxed looking at the camera one
....
a permit is required for professional photos (as its state property)
....
props go a long way with changing up posing and there isnt much variety in that regard ...no benches, stairs, etc .....so no sitting down photos really other than the wooden fence, grassy field or doorway..... i did see someone use the white basement doors to sit on though

for my history / architecture followers there was very little info about the building itself and its significance from a historical standpoint at the location though there was a sign post where that info would normally be so that could be done once the pandemic is over

this is a popular place. i try to focus on more untapped locations in the feed but i was doing a mitzvah preshoot here with Sloane (pictured in some of the photos) and decided "well im building a website directory and want it robust with all types of locations including popular ones".....so here we are

also, this place is great for spring photos as the garden comes in

HISTORY from Wiki -
The arboretum surrounds the Frelinghuysens' Colonial Revival mansion and its formal gardens, and features nature trails with labeled trees and shrubs. The arboretum was established on the site of Whippany Farm, owned by George Griswold Frelinghuysen (1851-1936), son of Frederick T. Frelinghuysen, and a New York City patent attorney and president of Ballantine Brewing Company from 1905 until his retirement, and Sara Ballantine (1858-1940) of Newark, New Jersey, granddaughter of the founder Peter Ballantine of the Ballantine Brewing Company. In 1920, Mrs. Sara Ballantine planted roses, and the rose beds were laid out between the spokes of a Chippendale style brick wall set in a basket weave pattern. In 1964 their daughter, Matilda Frelinghuysen (1887-1969) began plans to turn the estate into an arboretum. Today's Frelinghuysen Arboretum was dedicated in 1971.

Today I take you to the grounds of the Cooper Gristmill in Chester, NJ to take some self portraits.

Cooper Gristmill, located on 14 acres, was built in 1826 and is one of the remaining restored water-powered mills in New Jersey. It is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

The area is part of the Black River Trail which is great for people looking to hike while taking photos. There is a cool waterfall but only 1 angle really to take photos of it from.

The grounds, especially the mill itself, gave me country music vibes. This location would be perfect for a country album cover or music video. I also loved the tunnel and its what got me to seek this place out after seeing an Instagram photo of it (@stefanlanecreative)

HISTORY:

The Morris County Park Commission acquired Cooper Gristmill in 1973, and opened it to the public in October 1978. The stretch of the Black River on which the Cooper Gristmill is situated is well-suited for the operation of water-powered mills.

In the 1760’s, Isaiah Younglove began a flour milling operation that lasted until 1788. Over the years, the mill went through several owners, with the present mill purchased by Retired General Nathan Cooper. He purchased the original mill in 1825 for $750, which included a gristmill and sawmill powered by two wooden water wheels. In 1826, General Cooper built the four-story gristmill that is standing today. Throughout the 19th century, the gristmill ground primarily wheat, but also corn, and other grains. With four sets of millstones connected by elevators to grain cleaners and flour sifters, the mill ground up to 10 tons of grain each day. This mill remained in operation until the early 20th century. Modern turbines installed in the 1870s replaced the mill’s two original wooden waterwheels. Today, the mill runs by an all-steel-Fitz Company waterwheel.

During late 2005 to the early 2006, James Kricker of Rondout Woodworking conducted repairs, fabrication, and installation of historic mill machinery on the second and third floors of the Cooper Gristmill. The goal was to complete the restoration and installation of the historic machinery to show and interpret the complete mill process from grain receiving, to cleaning, grinding, sifting, and finally bagging. This main work included the installation of the main drive and the power-train equipment that powers the machinery. New plank flooring was installed on the third floor and stairs up to the third floor. A dedication ceremony for the completed restoration was held in 2006, as part of the mill's Annual Black River Day.
